When it comes to fashion, we’ve seen trends come and go, but the basics always remain the frontrunners in our closets. While, trends can be fun and exciting, a closet needs balance. For me, basics are those items that never go out of style. The pieces you can mix and match or throw on when in a time crunch. I’ve narrowed it down to 5 essentials that every girl should own…or eventually own! Just click the arrows to shop my favorites as all price points.
Comment below and let me know what you guys think.

A utility jacket like this will go far in your wardrobe. I’ve worn mine layered with long sleeve or short sleeve tops. It’s truly the perfect year round staple!
A striped shirt should be one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. You can wear them with other patterns and prints and layer with your favorite jackets and cardigans.
I’ve had this scarf for two years and it is still a staple in my fall & winter wardrobe. I love a chunky knit scarf!
Every girl needs a leather clutch you can use for any occasion. I love the size and color of the Saint Germain Leather Clutch. It’s structured, yet still feminine. This is definitely a classic bag that can be used year round.
Finding the perfect jeans can be hard. Trust me, I know! I finally found my favorite pair of skinny jeans (ever) and I wish I could wear them every single day. I also have this pair of dark skinny jeans, which also fit pretty well. You can see how I styled these here and here.

I was wearing an outfit so similar to this the other day so it’s funny you post this because these pieces are such a staple in my closet and can be so easily switched up! Thanks for sharing!

Hi! Thanks for your comment. I love that striped tee, especially because it’s a little longer in the back. I’m pretty sure it’s on sale too! Thank you so much for reading.

Wow – I don’t think many people can blow more than $200 on a pair of jeans… especially on a light AND a dark wash?!?!

Hi Kim!
Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate the feedback. These were definitely a splurge and another pair was given to me for Christmas. I did link a very similar pair that were under $100 and still fit great. Did you check those out?
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day! xx Ashley

Thanks for your response – no I didn’t but I will check it out! It has become very frustrating for me to read daily blogs where most of the items featured seem to be in the price range that for me is not affordable or justifiable. To each their own, I guess!

I, too, am a teacher! I love your style. About the jeans . . . HELP! Looking at the under $100 pair and can’t decide on size. I am thin and small-framed BUT have curvy thighs. Any idea if these will work for a shape like that? I have tried on hundreds of jeans and still can’t find a pair! Desperate!

Hi Carol!
Thanks so much for your comment. If I were you, I would order two sizes, then send one back. Nordstrom has free shipping and free returns (amazing!) so it’s risk free. I also like this high wasted pair: http://bit.ly/1o9UScY and found them to run true to size. They are very flattering too! Hope that helps and I hope your school year is going GREAT! 🙂
