After spending the past 8 days at the beach, I figured it was only fitting to squeeze in a little sun care 101 into this weeks Beauty Talk. For years we have been told to pile on the SPF before heading out into the sun, but have we all followed this rule?
I have to thank my mom (who has great skin I should add) for always making me wear SPF 75+ growing up. Yes, I would roll my eyes because all my friends would spread pure oil on their bodies to get that real golden tan. I always wanted to get that tan. I laugh now, because that is pretty ridiculous and not to mention dangerous. I’m not perfect in this area, but I can say I try my best to take care of my skin and hair when in the sun.
Sun Bum is a skin care brand that I have used and always go back to. My favorite is the Sun Bum Face Stick with SPF 30. It’s oil free and hypoallergenic. My face is pretty sensitive, so it was important to find something that wouldn’t irritate my skin or cause breakouts. I thought that I needed more than SPF 30 for my face but after attending a few workshops focusing on SPF awareness, I realized it’s not necessarily the amount, but how often you apply. You can’t just put on your sunscreen in the morning and forget about it for the rest of the day. You have to be conscious to remember to reapply. I take a spray by Hampton Sun out with me to the beach and use it to reapply (I mainly use this one on my face and neck since it is a little more of an investment). The mist is amazing and doesn’t leave my skin blotchy or greasy.
Did you know that your hair can actually take a beating from the sun as well? Aveda (love this brand) came out with the Sun Care line years ago, and it is still a hit. I use the Protective Sun Veil every time I plan to be in the sun for a long period of time. No, I don’t take this out to recess with me ( I’m not that much of a diva ) but a trip to the beach- yes! This spray is amazing. It has UVA/UVB filters to protect the hair from sun damage- which leads to breakage, fading and dry/dull hair. No thanks! It’s super lightweight so it won’t make your hair greasy or sticky. All you need is a light mist on dry or damp hair.
What are some of your favorite sunscreens?

I’ve never tried the Sun Bum brand, but have seen it talked about a lot…and honestly the packaging is cute so I’ll probably buy some. 🙂
