Mother’s Day Beauty Gift Ideas

When it comes to beauty, nothing is more beautiful to me than my sweet Mom. Not only is she fabulous on the outside (just look at that hair!), but her heart is just as lovely. Mom’s teach us many things, but I appreciate most how my Mom showed me what it means to be a daughter of Christ, love others and have joy in all circumstances (of course, Dad you helped too, but this is a Mother’s Day post!). 

From an early age I can remember wanting to wear makeup. My mom caught me at the age of two going through her purse and smearing lipstick all over my face (and walls, eek! sorry mom!)  Despite many arguments, my Mom made me wait until I was an appropriate age before allowing me to wear minimal makeup. And as much as I loved that chunky glitter eyeshadow and eyeliner (hello 1999) that just wasn’t an option. And for that mom, I thank you.

To this day, my Mom and I share the same love for skin care and makeup products, and I am so excited to team up with Ulta Beauty to share some of our favorite picks for Mother’s Day. We love Ulta for many reasons, but one being the fact that they have budget friendly items as well as prestige products. It’s a win-win!

When raiding Mom’s makeup bag, it was obvious she sticks with more classic skincare and makeup products. I’ve introduced her to a few trendy lipsticks and eyeshadows, but for the most part my Mom likes to stick with products that can be worn daily (or almost daily).  Like most of us, Mom doesn’t like to waste money on products or over buy, so the products she has, she uses and they work!

Apologies for the length of this post. I wanted to be sure and share the details of the products we recommend and answer some questions that were sent in over snapchat last week. A lot of you requested anti-aging skin care and makeup for Mom (or yourself) so we made sure to categorize those within the post. SKINCARE PICKS FOR MOM

STRIVECTIN EYE CONCENTRATE 

Mom loves this product because not only does it help reduce fine lines around the eyes, but it also helps with dark circles and puffiness. She uses the StriVectin Eye Concentrate each morning and night, and recommends only using a small dot for each eye. This stuff is a little pricey, but worth it if you use it consistently. Great for sensitive skin too!

OLAY REGENERIST MULTI-SCULPTING CREAM WITH SPF 30

With so many anti-aging creams and moisturizers on the market, it can be tricky finding the best one for you. My Mom has used Olay products for years, and loves this face cream. She has tried the $100-$150 creams countless times, but always comes back to this budget friendly version. Unlike most sunscreens, it’s not greasy. My Mom said she found this cream to be lightweight, yet it still makes your skin feel soft. So, does this product work overnight? No! Like most things, you need to try it consistently for a couple weeks. However, she does notice that her skin looked and felt more smooth within the first fews days of trying this.

CLARISONIC MIA 

I actually got this for Mom as a gift a couple of years ago, but this is a product that both her and I use daily. I have the MIA 2, but honestly they work very similar. This facial brush is worth every penny. A few things to keep in mind when using your Clarisonic, it does not exfoliate, but it does remove loose skin cells and buff out the skin. It will not clear your skin up overnight (or even within the first few days) but it will keep your skin clear and smooth with continual use. It took me a few weeks to honestly notice a difference, but now I can tell right away when I don’t use it.  I bring mine with me on every trip and use it each morning.  I use it with DDF Salicylic Face Wash (Great for those who suffer from minor breakouts…I like to leave the cleanser on my face for a minute before using the brush) and my Mom uses the Refreshing Gel Cleanser.

 

MAKEUP PICKS FOR MOM

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CREAM CONTOUR KIT

I am a little partial to this product because I am obsessed with almost everything from ABH and this was no exception. Mom and I both use the color Light, and found that a little goes a long way.  This took a little practice at first. I remember sending Mom videos to watch and tutorials to review, but what really helped was just hands-on practice. And once we got the hang of it, it was so easy to use. I use an Angled Brush to apply, and find that it’s best to start with a little, then add more if needed.

So why cream over powder? Honestly, they both work really well. However, I prefer the cream because it stays on longer and can be easier to blend. Unlike the powder, it’s best to start with a very small amount (tap your brush 3 times lightly onto the cream, it may not look like you have any on your brush but you do!) because it can easily look too “shadowy” if you use too much. The highlight colors are so pretty and look very natural. I found the powder to look dull on me, and the cream highlight helps give my skin a subtle glow without looking oily. This was a win for both of us!

URBAN DECAY NAKED ONE AND DONE

This is a great foundation for my Mom. It’s oil-free, instantly blurs imperfections and evens out skintone for a result that looks natural that still gives great benefits. I found this to be very lightweight with moderate coverage. My mom likes it because it has SPF 20 and it doesn’t appear to look “cakey” on the skin. Also, it has more benefits than your typical foundation. Over time, pores will appear smaller and skin looks noticeably firmer and more radiant. She uses it with the LORAC Mattifying Face Primer and LORAC POREfection Concealer. That concealer is very easy to blend and great for under eyes!

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE UNDEREYE

You may remember me talking about this before, but this product is the best concealer we have ever used. Mom says this is the only thing she has been able to find that will cover age spots 100%. We actually doesn’t use it for under our eyes, but for dark spots or breakouts. Keep in mind, that this can be a little drying and difficult to blend if you use to much. So, I mix it with my moisturizer to help it blend and not look so heavy. A little goes a long way. I literally use a tiny dot! I wear the color Light Medium and my Mom wears Light.

EYESHADOW AND MASCARA MUST HAVES

BENEFIT THEY’RE REAL PRIMER + IT COSMETICS SUPERHERO

We all are trying to get longer lashes right? I’ve talked about the They’re Real Lash Primer on here several times and to this day it is the best primer I’ve tried. I finally got my Mom to try it and she agrees! #momapproved

However, I am new to trying the IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara. Wow! This stuff seriously makes your lashes longer, thicker and voluminous. Mom is always asking me about what mascara to try to get longer lashes and we both decided to give this one a try. I am very impressed…this duo works!

LORAC BEHIND THE SCENES EYESHADOW PRIMER

“Hands down my favorite…..and I’ve tried many. This is lightweight with a creamy texture and slight tint. Keeps my eye make up from creasing from day to night.”– Mom  It’s true. This stuff is what I wore on my wedding day and since then I’ve gone through two tubes. It’s the real deal!

URBAN DECAY NAKED PALETTE

I laugh about this product because I left it at my parents house last year, and still never got it back! Mom loves it so much so I decided to just let her keep it. This is truly a gift for everyone. It has so many wearable shades that it can be used for both work or a night on the town. My favorite shades in the palette are Virgin and Smog.

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS BROW DEFINER

This is another great brow pencil by ABH. My mom and I have both used Brow Wiz and LOVED it, however we go through it very fast. I was having to replace my pencil much sooner than I expect and apparently many people felt the same way. ABH received a ton of feedback from their customers so they came out with the Brow Definer. It’s very similar to Brow Wiz, however it has a triangle tip, so you have more control over how much or little color you want to add. It’s also “thicker” so you don’t go through this quite as fast.

FAVORITE LIPSTICKS

A girl can never have too many lipsticks, right? I love lipsticks and has been trying to get my Mom to try the “Matte Liquid Lipstick Trend“. She isn’t too crazy about the matte look, but I love it! She does however appreciate how they stay on all day. You really can’t beat the longevity of a matte liquid lipstick. We decided to compromise by adding a gloss on top of the matte lipstick. She loved it! The color still stays on for hours and you have a glossy finish. Here are a few of my favorites! Mom is wearing Caramello + Peony and I am wearing Rosa + Baci.

STILA LIQUID LIPSTICK: ROSA ***Note: this is not a wearable color alone. This is meant to be mixed with other colors to add a soft muted looked. I loved this with Carmello or Baci. When mixing, don’t apply one color on top of the other like you would with a normal gloss. You need to actually mix the colors first before you apply. I like to just blot the colors on my lips, then blend with my lip brush.***
