It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I started to really understand the benefit of using a face primer. I always had this idea in my head that using a primer would either make my skin become more oily or cause it to breakout. However, I quickly discovered that isn’t the case with some primers. A primer is a base for your foundation that creates a smooth canvas for makeup application. It can help smooth pores, increase longevity in your makeup, and help soften any minor skincare concerns. And yes, it really does work! But remember, always let your moisturizer and serums set in your skin before applying your primer. If time allows, I usually wait a minute or two before applying my primer.
Not all primers are created equal. Like I mentioned earlier, there are some that specifically help with smoothing, color correction, and the list goes on. Here are a few of my favorite primers for smoothing, SPF, and makeup longevity:
BEST SMOOTHING: TARTE TIMELESS SMOOTHING PRIMER
This primer is one of a kind. The Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer is perfect for areas on your face that you want to smooth. I would not recommend using this on your entire face, but just on those specific areas. I personally have large pores around my nose. I pat a small amount (very small) into my pores and it creates a smooth canvas. This is a great “add-on” primer, but I would not recommend this as your only primer or to use on your entire face. It’s best used on those small areas. This is ideal for someone with large pores, acne scars or fine lines.
Beauty Tip: I find this to work best when I press the product into my skin rather than rub around like I would my moisturizer. This jar should last you a while. You only need to use very little for the product to work.
BEST FACE PRIMER WITH SPF: Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer Sunscreen SPF 50
Despite the reviews online, I actually found this to be really nice. I am such a fan of the Armani foundation and I wanted to give this a try. The Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer Sunscreen is perfect for anyone who is wanting that full spectrum SPF coverage and a softer complexion. Usually sunscreens can make my skin oily or cause breakouts, but this did not. It’s a very lightweight liquid, almost like water, that melts into your skin. I don’t think it made my skin as smooth as other primers, but it definitely helped increase longevity in my makeup. I also like that it has a higher SPF 50 than most primers. I plan on taking this with me when we head to LA in a few weeks.
Beauty Tip: Be sure to shake really well before using. I only used three little drops for my face…a little goes a long way!
BEST HYDRATING: TOO FACED HANGOVER REPLENISHING PRIMER
This is the primer that I am currently using. I purchased a smaller size to try it first and I love it! This dewy primer is perfect to wear alone or under your foundation. It helps my skin feel and look refreshed and healthy. I always worry when I hear “dewy” or “healthy glow” because that can sometimes translate as oily. But this was not the cases. The Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Primer really does make my skin feel better and I will definitely repurchase the larger size.
PS: I hear they are longing the Hangover Replenishing Primer Setting Spray this summer. I am so excited to give it a try!
BEST OVERALL: HOURGLASS VEIL MINERAL PRIMER
This nationally recognized primer is number one for a reason, it works! I actually started with the travel size back in December and since then have purchased the larger size. This is a great overall primer and with SPF 15. I would recommend this to anyone who is starting to use primers or anyone who wants a softer complexion. The Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is lightweight and makes my skin feel soft.

How do you apply the hourglass primer? With your fingers? And then how do you apply your foundation after? I feel like when I use my fingers, it doesn’t blend properly. Thanks!

Hi Jackie,
Great question. So I recently tested out applying the Hourglass primer with the nude beautyblender. I actually found that to blend into my skin much better than using my fingers. Also, I use a beautyblender (I like the black one) to apply my foundation. I’ve tried severe brushes but at the end of the day, I just like how the beautyblender makes my foundation look on my skin. I hope that helps! xx Ashley

I’ve been very curious about the Too Faced Primer as well. It has so many positive reviews and I like that I can buy the smaller size to try first. I heard it smells like the beach. Is it the smell overpowering?
Ashley Robertson says
Hello Teresa,
That is a great question! The primer has a coconut smell, very refreshing, but definitely not overpowering. Thank you for your comment! Have a great day! xx, Ashley
