I am so excited to finally share an updated hair tutorial featuring how I get my everyday loose curls. I’m definitely not a pro, but this is my regular routine and my favorite way to style my hair. Not only is it a low maintenance hairstyle, but I actually figured out how to get my curls to last a good 2 (maybe 3) days without restyling. Don’t worry, I’m sharing my secrets below. I hope you enjoy this loose curls hair tutorial!

HOW TO GET LOOSE CURLS
- Start with clean hair. If time allows, I let my hair air dry overnight. This gives it some texture and helps keep the curl bouncy. Before curing, I use Oribe Royal Blowout. This heat protecting mist helps fight frizz, heat damage and gives a subtle sheen to your hair. It’s weightless and works on both wet or dry hair. I know it’s pricey, but it’s good. The directions say to use it on damp hair, but my hair stylist recommends using it on wet or dry hair.
- Section your hair. I usually divide mine into two parts. I love using these clamps (these are good for setting the curls- we’ll get to that in a minute).
- Take a 1.5-2 inch section of hair (the larger the section, the bigger the curl). I typically take 2 inch sections when curling my hair, especially the front. The OUAI Medium Hair Spray is my go-to hairspray when curling. This is a dry hairspray and is not at all sticky. It’s great for holding curls! I give my hair a quick spray before curling.
- Curl away from your face using a 1.25 inch curling iron. This will give the look of natural, voluminous curls.
- After curling each section, allow the curl to cool in your hand. This will help set the curl. If time allows, I clip up each individual curl and allow it to set while I do my makeup. In my opinion, this is the best way to achieve long lasting curls.
- Continue curling the bottom section away from your face.
- Take down the top section of hair. Use a teasing comb for some added volume on the top few layers. I use the Kerastase VIP Spray at the roots as it’s a great volumizer/texturizer. I like this because it doesn’t make my hair feel sticky. You can’t even tell you have product in your hair!
- Continue curling away from your face and clipping up each curl. Then, give your hair a quick spray with the OUAI Medium Hair Spray (or your favorite medium hold hairspray) and allow your curls to cool completely. The longer you leave them clipped up, the bouncier your curls will be.
- Once you’re ready to take the clips out, use half a pump of the OUAI Hair Oil while running your fingers through the ends of your hair. You do not want to get this oil at your roots. Running your fingers through your ends will give you that soft, tousled curl. If you’re hair is very fine and tends to get oily, I would suggest the OUAI Rose Hair + Body Oil. I have tried it and it smells wonderful.
STYLE TIP: To get your curls to last a few more days, sleep with your hair in a loose bun. I usually wear mine on the top of my head, but if it’s more comfortable to sleep on a low bun, that will work too. I use dry shampoo (a full list of my favorite dry shampoos) at the roots and let it sit overnight before brushing it out. In the morning, I brush through the roots with a boar bristle brush. I will also use a little hair oil on my ends. If you’re one of the lucky ones that can get away with another day of dry shampoo, follow that same routine for Day 3.

This is incredibly detailed; I love the photo sequence. It makes it so very easy to understand. A lot of times people will have the instructions in a paragraph with one picture for every 2-3 steps but this documents every step. Love it!

Hi Ashley! Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I wish I could get all those products, but they’re just too expensive. If you had to pick 2 of the four you mentioned above, which would you choose? Thank you!!
xx,
Lindsay
Ashley Robertson says
Hi Lindsay,
Thank you for your kind comment! If I had to pick two of the four products, I would purchase the OUAI Medium Hair Spray because it’s a dry hair spray, so it doesn’t weigh down your hair and is brushable. My second choice would be the Oribe Royal Blowout. I know this product is on the pricer side, but it can be used on wet or dry hair, is completely weightless, and leaves your hair smelling amazing. Oribe usually goes on sale on Black Friday and is always in my round-up, fingers crossed its on sale this year! I hope that helps! Have a great weekend. xx, Ashley

What are the jeans you are wearing ?
Ashley Robertson says
Hey Christie,
I am wearing the Frame denim and they are currently on sale! You can find them here: http://bit.ly/2uzBPQa They look more grey in these pictures from editing, but they are a true blue jean. I hope you have a great week! xx, Ashley
Victoria says
Love your hair! Have u ever tried oribe dry texturizung spray? That’s what I have now! How does it compare to your products mentioned? Is there any product that it can take its place of the ones mentioned above? Xoxo!
Ashley Robertson says
Hi Victoria,
I love the Oribe dry texturizing spray! That was actually one the first luxury products I ever bought. I have a whole post on that product here: http://bit.ly/2hDIofB The texturizing spray won’t give you a whole lot of hold in your hair, but would be good for a tousled look. Honestly, I don’t think there really is any product that could take its place. The Kerastase Volume in Powder is pretty good, but prefer Oribe’s smell better. I hope that helped!
Have a great week! xx, Ashley
Kellen Reid Malone says
Your hair is beautiful, as always!! How do you have your hairstylist cut your hair?
Ashley Robertson says
Hi Kellen,
Thank you for your kind comment and question! I am currently working on a post about what to tell your hairstylist for coloring and/or haircut, so be on the lookout for that! But she does a lot of long layers all over with shorter layers framing my face. Hope that helps! xx Ashley
