Travel, in general, can be a stressful thing. Sure, we get excited about the destination or the vacation spot, but usually, there are some crazy moments involved. To keep my skin in check, I always travel with products focused on helping keep my skin hydrated and blemish free. Which we all know can be a feat traveling or not.
I am heading to NYC for work tomorrow and it has me thinking about my beauty routine. With back-to-back meetings and photo shoots, my skin needs to be on its best behavior.
I put together a little list of my tried and true skincare must-haves and shared a few tips and tricks along the way. And thanks to a couple flight attendants who are regular TTD readers, they were able to chime in and share their tips as well.
Here are the 5 beauty products I always travel with:
1. FACIAL MIST: CAUDALIE BEAUTY ELIXIR
This face mist has been my go-to for the past 6 years. I go back and forth with other brands, but this is one that I always bring when I travel. It’s great for giving my skin an extra boost of hydration or to refresh my makeup throughout the day.
Editor’s Tip: My esthetician recommends not using a facial mist mid-flight. Because the airplane climate has low humidity, the air takes moisture from wherever it can. Since water attracts water, spraying a mist mid-flight will dry out the skin even more. It is recommended to use your mist right before you board or as soon as your land. To keep your skin hydrated, be sure to drink plenty of water before and during your flight (and hope you’re in an aisle seat) and use a moisturizer before the flight.
2. SHEET MASKS: JOANNA VARGAS DAWN FACE MASK and PATCHOLOGY LIP RENEWAL FLASHPATCH LIP GELS
You know I love a good sheet mask. I always take a few with me on every trip. They are so easy to travel with and take up very little space in my beauty bag.
Since flights tend to make my skin dry, the Joanna Vargas mask helps restore my glow. I typically pack a couple and use them at night or right after my flight. My lips also get really dry when I travel. The Patchology Lip Gels are a great option to use during the flight (if you know your seatmate, ha!) or later that evening.
3. MOISTURIZER: CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE GEL-CREAM
Gel Moisturizers have been a game changer for my skin. Seriously though, if I go without one (even for a few days) I notice a few breakouts. This mini size one by Clinique is perfect for my carry-on.
4. EXFOLIATOR: REN STEADY GLOW DAILY AHA TONIC
It’s no secret I am a fan of REN Skincare. This AHA Tonic is a skin resurfacing toner that gently exfoliates and brightens the skin. Since it’s very gentle, it’s safe enough to use daily—morning and night.
If you like a gritty exfoliator or face scrub, you have to try ExfoliKate by Kate Somerville. Hands down the best face scrub I have ever used.
Reader Tip: This tip comes from TTD reader, Sarah (who is also a flight attendant). She recommends pre-soaking your cotton pads with your favorite toner, makeup remover, or tonic and sealing them each in a plastic baggie. This will allow more room for other products in your carry-on, and you don’t have to worry about spillage! This idea is genius. Thanks for sharing, Sarah!
5. BEAUTY SERUM: REN INSTANT FIRMING BEAUTY SHOT and TRISH MCEVOY BEAUTY BOOSTER EYE SERUM
We all know that serums help give your skin a boost of hydration. Especially when followed by a good moisturizer. The REN Instant Firming Beauty Shot is a beauty serum that I am currently using. I can instantly feel a difference when using it. That sounds dramatic, but it’s true. Most things claim to work right away, but with this, I actually do feel a difference on my skin. If you’ve tried this, you know what I am talking about.
Also, we can’t forget about our eyes! I always pack a good eye serum or moisturizer when traveling. This makes all the difference.
BEAUTY TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE TRAVELING
- Drink plenty of water before your flight and during.
- Don’t forget the SPF (especially if you are in a window seat). I’ve used this SPF Setting Spray for years and it works great. Spray before you get on the flight though!
- Stick to your normal routine. Since traveling is already stressful enough, your skin doesn’t need to go through any more surprises. If possible, keep to your routine as much as possible.
- If you tend to get oily or blemish prone, bring blotting papers. Since the air is so dry mid-flight, your skin might over-compensate and produce more oil. Which we know can lead to clogged pores, thus causing breakouts. Blotting paper can help rid your skin from unwanted oil.
