Something I’ve learned over the last few weeks is that one of the main reasons white people, myself included, do not like to talk about racism, privilege and equality with our friends, family and peers is because it’s uncomfortable. And a message I’ve really taken away from the Black community recently is that if we ever want to help create change, we have to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
As I start to have these conversations and be a voice that can help represent black people, sometimes words just fail me. In those cases, I’ve found it really helpful to refer to the amazing graphics and visuals that have been circulating on Instagram lately. I’m extremely grateful to the Black activists, leaders and artists that have taken the time to create these resources for free when it is not their job to educate white people.
I highly recommend referring to these graphics any time you’re trying to explain something to your uncle that always makes racist jokes, your friend who’s having a hard time grasping everything, or anyone else you’re talking to.
I linked to all the sources of these graphics the best I could, but if I missed something, please share in the comments – I wholeheartedly want to give the creators credit.
If you are looking for ways to support Black-owned businesses, be sure to check out this list.
xx, Ashley
